Full Explanation:
"The
atmosphere of corruption in Washington is a disgrace
which not only dishonors our nation but one which
produces untold misery for the large majority of
Americans who do not benefit from special interest
lobbyists. I suppose as long as there is greed,
there will be corruption, but I can make a personal
pledge to do my part to eliminate as much of it
as I can."
1. I pledge never to lie to my constituents—ever!
2. If I
tell you I am going to abide by a term limit, I
will.
3. If I
tell you I will support cheaper prescription drugs
from Canada, I will.
4. If I
tell you I won’t vote for CAFTA, you can take
my word to the bank.
5. I pledge
never to take any lobbyist or corporate PAC money,
and if by some oversight a mistake is made, to return
any monies immediately upon the discovery of the
mistake.
6. I pledge
never to go on a trip privately funded by a special
interest group. If I travel on your behalf, it will
be on government business and will be paid by the
government. If it is on private business, I will
pay my own way. If it is to speak or appear at the
request of a group, I will ask only that my expenses
be covered. As long as I am in office, I pledge
to take no personal fees or honoraria, and if they
are offered, I will ask that they be donated to
charity.
7. I pledge
to fight for genuine campaign finance reform, and
by that I mean the public funding of all elections
along the lines now used in the state of Maine.
Public funding is the only way to prevent the massive
corruption that threatens the very existence of
our democracy.
